Landscape Architecture – a career that is often Landscape Architecture – a career that is often misunderstood. However, landscape architects form an incredibly diverse and exciting profession.

We are responsible for designing places of every scale imaginable from regional planning to city centres, pocket parks and gardens. We help create outdoor spaces with a focus on community, wellbeing, play, inclusivity and nature and are leading the way on climate change.

World Landscape Architecture describe landscape architecture as “the study and practice of designing environments of varying scale that encompasses elements of art, environment, architecture, engineering, and sociology.” We are the only profession which is a hybrid of those elements.

But we don’t work alone. We work in design teams with architects, ecologists, arboriculturists, structural engineers, highway engineers, drainage engineers, planners, landscape contractors and more. We each bring our specialism to our projects to ensure the appropriate design is achieved for our clients.

Why is our profession so important at the minute? With the climate and biodiversity crisis at the forefront of most conversations, landscape architects have the responsibility to design, action and promote sustainable design and biodiversity net gain.

We influence the landscape for current and future generations. We are architects of the landscape. Landscape Architects.

April is World Landscape Architecture month and at PWP we are raising awareness and celebrating the profession we are proud to be in.

Today is World Earth Day, and at PWP Design we hav Today is World Earth Day, and at PWP Design we have taken some time this week to reflect how we, as a practice and as a team of Landscape Architects, do our part to invest in our planet.

One of our biggest questions was what impact do we at PWP Design have on a global scale?

As a profession it is our duty to enhance, protect and strengthen the natural assets and surrounding environment on the broad spectrum of projects that we work on, reaching to both a local, national and international scale. Working in conjunction with multidisciplinary design teams to ensure that we deliver schemes that improve the landscape, future proofing its value as it establishes.

Also, as a company we have been working behind the scenes to improve our sustainability credentials, assessing how we function as a team within the office and how we approach our projects from the outset, rather than an after-thought.

So we quickly realised that we are doing our part, but, that we can always do more!

How do you invest in our planet? 🌍

A brilliant afternoon working with teenage girls t A brilliant afternoon working with teenage girls through a creative consultation process to understand what they would like in their local park.

Mental health issues amongst teenage girls is 16% higher than teenage boys. Existing research shows that spending time in green spaces like local parks benefits deprived groups the most and can help mental health and wellbeing.

Here are the teenage girl's creative models of what they would like in their local park in Shipley.
